Toome Road
The roads of Toome, in Fanad, wind around
Among the hedgerow’s rams and lambs, their ewe,
Second gear for cruising here, my eyes aground
To peer the path as it appears in view.
Then in the lane two mothers with their prams
Were taking in the day, they pulled aside,
I clutched and braked, two boys out with their mams
Had peaked their heads to see if we’d collide.
No fear for there was room enough for all,
The mirror scraped the fuschia as I waved,
The ladies smiled, a sun shone flowered wall,
Unclutch and find the part of road that’s paved.
From thatched roof cottage, farms and holiday homes,
To and from Toome, outdoors, on sunlit roams.
