120722 song Sparrow Haven
Sparrow Haven
The sparrows chat in morning time
And watch the sun arise
My wife and I fill coffee mugs
Our thoughts and hair awry
We’ll wipe the sleep, look out to see
A baby blue pink sky
Will soon become our routine scene
Of cloudless clear blue skies
The sparrows live beneath our roof
Just there below the eaves
For all our generosity
They still behave as thieves
Yet, every day they make their way
Both from and to our home
Like her they’re out there all day long
Return from where they roam
The cat and I work through these lines
While wife and dog are out
I like to stay and take it in
And push my words about
Their morning walk invigorates
They bring back outdoor cheer
The birds make way and flit about
Our Luna brings back fear
While she’s asleep they scour the walk
And bob about for berries
Their constant chatter through the glass
Will pause when postman carries
Our daily dross and boxed up goods
Some letters back I’d sent
He’ll smile and wave but they don’t care
They’re not sure what he meant
The sparrows’ pause seems reverent
They watch in silent awe
Then Luna hears and lets us know
The window sounds her claw
By now this daily exercise
Goes on in bland repeat
Should I these sparrows exorcize
And close their eaves retreat?
For years I’ve asked my wife and she
Can’t bear to have it done
With babies there can’t kick them out
Again the birds have won
